Dental Crown vs Dental Bridge
Both are fixed restorations cemented onto natural teeth or implants, but they serve different purposes.
When Is a Crown Recommended?
A dental crown is a custom, full-coverage restoration that restores a tooth’s size, shape, strength and appearance.
Deep Decay or Broken Teeth
Protects and rebuilds a tooth with extensive decay or large fractures.
After Root Canal Therapy
Root-treated teeth become brittle; a crown protects them from cracking.
Large, Failing Fillings
When an old filling breaks down and there isn’t enough enamel left to support a new one.
Severely Worn Teeth
Restores height and biting function to teeth flattened by grinding.
Cosmetic Improvement
Covers severely discoloured, misshapen or asymmetrical teeth.
Why Replacing a Missing Tooth Matters
A dental bridge is a fixed, non-removable restoration that fills the gap left by missing teeth: an artificial ceramic tooth (pontic) held in place by crowns on the healthy teeth either side.
When a tooth is lost, neighbouring teeth drift and tilt into the space. This disrupts your bite, can cause jaw joint (TMJ) discomfort, increases the risk of gum disease around tilted teeth and can change your facial appearance over time. A bridge restores function and stops adjacent teeth from moving.

The Treatment Process
- 1
Evaluation & Digital Planning
We examine your teeth, gums and bite and take 3D intraoral scans and digital X-rays, with no messy putty.
- 2
Preparation & Shade Selection
Under local anaesthetic, the tooth (or anchor teeth) is reshaped and the shade carefully matched to your enamel.
- 3
CAD/CAM Design & Fabrication
Single crowns can be milled in the clinic in about 15 minutes; complex multi-unit bridges are crafted by our premier dental laboratory.
- 4
Fitting & Bite Calibration
We check fit, contour, contacts and shade, then bond the restoration and fine-tune your bite.
Caring for Crowns and Bridges
With good daily care and routine check-ups, crowns and bridges can last 10 to 15 years or longer.
Floss Under Bridges
Use floss threaders, superfloss or a water flosser to clean beneath the false tooth every day.
Brush Carefully
Brush twice daily with a soft brush, paying attention to where the crown meets the gum.
Protect Against Grinding
A custom nightguard protects your restorations if you clench or grind.
Avoid Hard Biting
Don’t bite ice or hard lollies, or open packaging with your teeth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are crowns and bridges noticeable?
No. We use high-translucency, metal-free ceramics (such as E.max® and zirconia) shade-matched to blend with your surrounding teeth.
Does getting a crown or bridge hurt?
Preparation and fitting are carried out under local anaesthetic. Any mild sensitivity afterwards usually settles within a few days.
What is the advantage of a single-visit crown?
We can prepare, scan, mill and bond your ceramic crown in a single 60- to 90-minute appointment, with no impressions, temporary crowns or extra visits.
Should I choose a bridge or an implant?
An implant replaces a missing tooth without altering neighbouring teeth; a bridge uses the adjacent teeth for support. We’ll consider your bone, oral health and budget to help you choose.
How much do crowns and bridges cost?
Costs depend on the material and whether you need a single crown or a multi-unit bridge. We provide a written, itemised estimate before treatment begins. Private health fund rebates (HICAPS) are processed on site, and flexible interest-free payment options (Afterpay, Zip and DentiCare) are available.
